Interlake Spectator — WINNIPEG BEACH -- The future of the town’s recreation centre remains an open question, as council awaits a legal opinion on its plan to dissolve the volunteer rec centre board and replace it with municipal appointees.
The rec board met Tuesday for its monthly meeting. There was little discussion about the council move, though board president Al Chopp noted that he had received a letter from the town the Monday before.
The letter, signed by Mayor Don Pepe, said council is looking to an appointed rec board.
Coun. Sonya Dodd sits as the town’s liaison on the rec centre board. Chopp asked Dodd if she had any comment about the letter.

“It’s self-explanatory,” she said. “We were waiting to see what happened at this meeting. Council is exploring [the appointed board option.]”
Thus ended the matter -- for the time being.
After the meeting, Chopp echoed the frustration he detailed in a story about the impending takeover last week.
If it’s going to happen, it’s better “that it happens sooner rather than later,” he said.
In the meantime, the rec board has a lot on its plate. It will continue to manage the affairs of the rec centre, ever mindful that its future is very much up in the air, pending a clear decision by town council.
The board decided to advertise for an icemaker, made preliminary plans for its annual general meeting and discussed, at some length, its constitution. Amendments to the constitution are being considered to make it more user friendly.
